The modem into my house was fried by a thunderstorm last
night. Since some of the LBNA site relies on this link,
certain URLs may have had flaky accessibility lately.
The problem has been fixed, and hopefully this cheesy
setup will be fixed by Aug 1. I hope no one was
inconvenienced too much. This also means site updates
have been delayed.
Secondly, there has been some spam on the list lately.
I do not have time to look into it with e-groups; perhaps
one of the other webmasters does. I do not want to make
this a moderated list, but I will if people are finding
the spam too annoying. Let me or the list know if you
want to make it moderated and we will go with majority
opinion.

The spam's not welcome but there's not so much that it's annoying either.
I vote for keeping the list unmoderated.

Please don't take this the wrong way, Mohmers, but 50+ lines of
signature text attached to a three-line message may be seen as
stretching the bounds of 'net ettiquette itself.

Serveral people have asked me about this, so ...
(This is being sent to all the lists I manage, sorry
if you are getting multiples)
If you just wish to continue receiving messages on this
list via e-mail only and not use any of the other e-groups
features, you shouldn't have to do anything and can delete
this now.
If you wish to use the web-based functions of the mailing
list (read the archives, read messages on the web, chat, polls,
etc, etc), you must now have a Yahoo! account linked to your
e-groups account.
To link accounts, go to http://www.egroups.com, you should
get a screen that says "Do you have an eGroups password?" or
"Special Announcement for eGroups Users". If you got the
latter, click on "Yahoo! Groups home page." near the top, then
click on "Link your accounts here" at the top left. You should
now be at "Do you have an eGroups password?"
Enter your _e-groups_ account name and password here (this is
usually the e-mail address you receive this list at, not as
the example misleads, a Yahoo! account, unless you happen to
currently receive your mail from this list at a Yahoo! e-mail
address.)
The next screen is your Yahoo! account. If you don't have one,
I imagine it lets you create one there, but I'm not sure, since
it had mine filled in automatically. If not, open another
browser (ctrl+N on netscape), and go to http://www.yahoo.com
and create one.
If you have any questions, e-mail me at mailto:randy@mapsurfer.com,
unless your question is "I've forgot my password". In this case,
follow the "forgot your password?" instructions at the bottom of the
wizards that ask for passwords. I do not have priveleges to remember
or reset passwords on your account.
Cheers,
Randy

Please voluntarily kill the flame thread or move it into a
more civil, constructive tone. If you disagree with my
judgement that the thread is not constructive, e-mail me your
concerns off-list. I'm not trying to suppress valid opinion,
and by all means state your peace, but please do so with
consideration of the other subscribers.
As to attachments, the culture of the list has always been to
allow them. Some people post their clues that way and view it
as a form of expression. The point about using the files capability
to distribute them is valid, as is, OTOH, the fact that they can be
avoided by reading the list via the web or the digest. The latter
allows the most elbow room in the traditional computer security
tradeoff of freedom vs safety.
Since your system should be secured against malicious attachments
regardless of whether or not this list bans them, I have always viewed
the issue as moot. You will most likely be on a list that does not
ban them anyway (I'm on 15 lists, 14 of them allow them, including
"bugtraq", where they can be quite ripe :-)). On one list, we
routinely send them around as a matter of business, and business
could not be conducted without them.
As I said previously, the attachment issue will be decided by
majority opinion (a "groundswell of opposition") -- I still feel
the majority favors them -- if you wish to take a vote, discuss it
further, prove to me that I have misjudged overall sentiment, etc,
fine, but bear in mind that this issue can explode into a holy war
as well (I've seen this); please don't let that happen here.
Cheers
Randy

I am not opposed to attachments per se, but never open them because they
usually come out "garbage," and help from more computer-literate friends
usually doesn't help. I ask for a cut-and-paste for something I really
want.
