[LbNA] y2k

From: Randy Hall (randy@mapsurfer.com) | Date: 1999-12-25 11:22:53 UTC-04:00
The server that runs letterboxing.org, some of the web pages, and my
clues prolly is not y2k ready. I guess we'll find out. This means
if you feel like hunting my boxes next year, you might want to print
out the clues this year.

Looks like we've got at least 35 states, and close to 300 clues
accessable on-line, at least 1 person whose found 100 and one
whos planted 100 (almost?), and at least 1 region where letterboxing
has really taken root. Not bad.

Well, have a happy current year and new year, and happy hunting :-)

Dear Erik et al,

I am not worried about y2k much at all, at least as far as our
northeast postings go. I feel fairly confident in my local provider,
and even if it should experience failures, I have all the files
here on my own computer.

I wsih a very happy new year to all.

Tom

Its nothing to worry about. I haven't really thought about y2k much,
but I do know worse case is that my stuff can be put on my ISP's server.
There might be a considerable delay in me doing this, though, hence the
warning. Most of the important stuff is on aol servers. If these people
don't make it, it don't really matter, I suppose.

Also, I back up Mitch's site once a week automatically (this archive will
not be affected by y2k). This of course does not get all the clues that
are elsewhere, but backing up every letterboxing clue on the web is beyond
the scope of (what I at least) want to be involved with (although because I
usually _print_ them when they are announced, I have a good collection of
them anyway).

Hey Randy (and all!)
Well, I certainly agree - letterboxing seems to have happily taken root
on out continent. So we are about 15 states shy by 12/31, I'll bet that
we somehow get them filled out DURING 200. And at least 300 boxes! Also,
something to be proud of.

One of the nicest things that I am looking forward to is the end of
"Y2K" hype, in all its formats. Hopefully, its just another day. BUT>>>>

I am concerned by Randy'd cavaet (mapsurfer.com not y2k compliant). How
bad a problem is this, assuming his clues and the base web page
disappear? At one point, there was a 'mirror site' to give some backup
in this or similar eventrality - is this still the case, if not, what
can be done?

Happy Holidays all.

Erik

We've been certified Y2K compliant since early June: all our boxes are
authorized tupperware or gladware, and all baggies are authentic
ziplocks (no generic). The hand cut stamps are all magic rub vinyl, and
the commercial ones are in that funny red looking material. Most of the
boxes are buried under certified gneiss or granite, as well. So when
the BIOS clocks tick-over, we're tested and secure.

Happy New Year! Jay

It's good to know that the quality of Letterboxing standards has not
slipped....

The boxes on Dartmoor are also planted in granite and peat bogs which too
are Millenium compliant

............er make that

Millennium Compliant for Y (-5) K .......er how do you write that ? big grin>

Happy M-Day one and all....

My son and I ( The Dancing Dragon and The Moorland Wizard ) will be
celebrating M-Day / M-Moment etc at the Tower of London ..which the rules
prohibit me placing a box at .. to watch London's big firework
spectacle...(The Queen loves fireworks ..so she has decided to make the
Thames "A River of Fire" ) And as all public transport is free...for 50
miles all around.......It's the best free show in town........Who needs TV
?

......if you can't be with us, we'll be thinking of you !

So wherever you and all the LbNA boxers are....when you become LbNM
(Letter Boxer of The New Millennium)

We will be cheering for you from here over the pond.....

Sincere Best Wishes !

Graham Howard..........(.and Leo )

Pam and I are happy to report the seeding of two boxes in Arizona. One of
these was actually placed before Jan 1 2000 and the other on Jan 1. Both
are in central AZ near or in Phoenix. I will post a URL with the clues in
the near future.
