[L-USA] Patches

From: Daniel Servatius (elf@pclink.com) | Date: 1999-03-05 21:37:17 UTC-06:00
I like the idea of patches. That way you could put one on your jacket
and people may say, "What's that?" Then you tell them about
letterboxing and next thing you know they're hooked.

Would there be any way I could get one of the prayer rock patches? Is
somebody sending that to be made? I really liked the green and yellow
image of that that Graham put out there the other day. Very creative!

Patches

From: (twograysquirrels@aol.com) | Date: 2000-04-07 00:07:52 UTC
I like the idea of a patch that says I belong to Letterboxing
Association or something like that. something that everyone can get.
Maybe pins as well and pins for recognition of milestones. Patches as
milestones seems a little much. The pins are more flexable and can be
moved around but they are also lost easily. i collect both. American
Birding Association has a member patch and milestone pins. i guess it
works for them. I would certainly buy a patch or pin. I think the
honor system would have to apply for the milestone pins. I don't want
competition to enter into this hobby but if someone wanted to
recognize themselves whay not. Or why not make a box to commemorate
your own achievement.

I too am in agreement with the patches idea. I think
a patch for all of us memebers is great. Then maybe a
patch for us who have 25 boxes placed/found, then 50
to 100 to 150 to 200 etc...
Patches also for carving, clue making, etc... those
could also be created. Yet don't we all create our
own stamps and clues? These might be given if someone
finds a clue interesting or challenging. Or maybe if
the spot for placing the box was perfect. The person
who found the box could recommend the owner of the box
for a patch. See what I'm saying?
The pins would also be cool for a milestone. Yet what
would be considered a milestone.

I think it would be great to have LbNA patches, both for general
affiliation and for "merit badges."

If we start with a patch for the former, let's make sure it's easily
adaptable for the second, e.g. empty spot to include a P13 or an
F50. (Those landmarks just sort of popped into my head.)

I would be in favor of simply using the LbNA logo on our page. I
queried Mitch last summer about using it for a pin, and he said that
would be fine with him. Neither one of us wanted to front the money,
however, so I didn't pursue it further.

Jeremy,

Nice work. I like the fact you've incorporated the LbNA logo, some
visual clues as to what Lboxing might be about and the compass...
Actually, I like it a lot!

I'm not sure yet about the PFX, but I look forward to other comments,
or other interpretations of your draft.

Thanks.

Lone Wolf

Hey everybody,
I got my patches and decals today and they look awesome!! In fact I
just finished sewing one on my backpack (ouch, my fingers hurt!) Hope to
see other letterboxers out there with their patches soon.

Me, too, me, too! We are still too snow covered here to do any
letterboxing, but I am off to Marco Island in Florida at the end of
February and will place a box or two then -- and will proudly sport
my new patch on my backpack! YAY!

Thanks, Kay, for your work (and for the hitchhiker, which will have
to wait for the thaw to be placed in a Michigan box!).

Ruthann,

You can be sure I will be the first to go after any boxes you place
down here in Florida! I am still waiting for a clue to be posted from
someone else who visited and hid a box (somewhere) :-(

I still have only mine to hunt down here and that isn't much sport.
Though I suppose as I age and the memory fades it can only get more
challenging ;-)

How do you know there aren't any mystery boxes down there? :-)

Regina you could make your own patch but the group is trying to get
an order ready; we need a minium of fifty to place the order. At
last count I think we were up to 36. If you would like to see what
they will look like goto message thread "4077" for the patch
and "4080" for the window decal. To get in on the order just goto
the poll area and vote. I personally hope to get my patch before
spring thaw but that will depend on how soon we can reach fifty
patches.

Hey Lil Sis...

you left the 8 out of your e-mail address in your first post. Looks
like Melissa tried to reply, but it got returned.

The patches you're asking about are letterboxing patches that a group
of members designed, ordered, and are now receiving the first
shipment. They'll put them on their packs and/or hats for the purpose
of identifying themselves to other letterboxers who they might come
across on the trail. The nature of the hobby is to hunt and stamp in
discreetly, and sometimes that means missing an opportunity to meet
and exchange stamps with others who are there for the same reason.

The patches we talked about last weekend were in relation to scouting
and I remembered a post from someone involved with girl or boy scouts
who mentioned possibly coming up with a patch for their scouts to
earn. The scout patch idea and the letterboxing patches are two
different things.

Look in the posts of early January. There's one from Stephen
Hutchinson who posted about finding my Meadow Farm box here in
Richmond. I think he's the one who mentioned scouting. I'll e-mail
him as well. Turns out he's the dad of a family whose kids attended
the school where I worked....small world, huh?

By the way, tell Patrick the clues to the letterbox we planted at
Jayne's Hill are on the map. Let him check the clues out on the
site, then take him up there soon to check on the box and on his
snowman he built while we were there.

Love ya, Kathy
