chiggers?

From: Charlotte Schmotzer (charpezt@yahoo.com) | Date: 2006-09-12 06:52:34 UTC-07:00
I will be travelling to Mexico and Texas for the first time in October. A friend suggested I be careful in the brush
(read that: letterboxing) as the "chiggers" hide there, and bite around waistbands, socks and other tight spots
(read that: bras, underwear etc)
so I am wondering how ya'll take precautions for that.
Is there a home remedy that works or only store bought stuff?
any recommendations would be appreciated.

Are you coming to Texas in early or late October? In my experience, chiggers
are usually more of a summertime problem than a fall problem, although it
could potentially still be warm enough for them, depending on the weather
between now and then. Mosquitoes are more likely to be a bigger problem
then, and actually pose more of a health risk than chiggers. Either one can
be controlled by using Off or Repel or any bug repellent.

Anything you'd use against mosquitoes will work on chiggers. The
main thing is to remember to spray those "tight" areas where they
get. Wear clothes that you don't mind spraying or that you won't be
too upset about possible stains from repellents.

I agree with Lucy, though. Mosquitoes are likely to be a bigger
problem--ticks as well.

Have fun,

Clhiggers are big in the Pine Barrens of Long Island as well as ticks. So
use that repellant and take a shower when you get home from hiking & put those
clothes in the washing machine particularly if you are off the trail in tall
grass or weeds.

A word to the wise.

As folks have already said, do use insect repellent, especially around
the 'bands' of your clothes: waistbands, cuffs, the tops of your
socks, where chiggers like to hide. If you do get them there is an
old home remedy that says to put nail polish on the bites to smother
the chiggers, but I've researched it and by the time you're itching
the damage is done. So don't bother with nail polish. Chiggers don't
seem to be dangerous, but they itch like a son of a gun, so do wear
that insect repellant!

Bugs in general, dislike B vitamins, or rather the stink we produce when we
metabolize B vitamins. B-1 is particularly stinky to mosquitoes.

Avoid sugar before going out. At least 2 hours.

Hmm I go to Mexico All the time but there are NO chiggers and there
are none here in CA I think it is too dry and I travel along the
coast. Ticks yes but mostly in the Spring. and we have Mosqies all
year long. Sorry if you travel to the coast and you will be OK! except
for all the tropical critters like gators be careful and swim where
the locals do it is for a reason!

Hey Charlotte,
I'm a native Texan, and I can say with confidence that you won't
need any precautions except regular old bug spray (and sunscreen,
but that's another topic). Chiggers won't be a problem in October,
but mosquitos might be depending on where you are (actually, I find
the mosquitos to be more of a problem in Ohio than in Texas). Don't
worry about spraying around your underwear and bra -- just exposed
skin and around your socks. Above all, just have fun boxing in
God's Country.
Take care,
Fly
