Why?

From: mvernoue2004 (mvernoue2004@yahoo.com) | Date: 2004-07-08 20:52:27 UTC
I have spent the past few days reading the messages here and I'm
confused about a few things. I'm not sure what FAQ's are or where
they exist, but I have read something on here repeatedly and I don't
understand why there is so many arguments over how to do or not do
things. I'm a little leery now of joining this hobby as there seems
to be a sense of community missing. In one of my other groups, there
is also a lot of tension from time to time, but it always gets pacthed
up and not let to fester resulting in people leaving. I really don't
understand why there seems to be so much strife here. Are we not
doing this for the joy it brings?

i am a fairly new boxer as well and after sticking it out for abit
discovered that there is not as much tension as there seems. just different
views and as this is such a diverse sport maybe different ways of expressing
themselves. i have also discovered over the months that not all posts are as
they seem. stick around you will be glad you did! in the meantime there is
places you can go to learn what this creative hobby is all about (besides
searching for tupperware in strange and exotic places). one is the newboxers
yahoo group. i am not sure of the link so maybe someone else will fill that
one in. the other is http://www.lbworld.org

FAQ is "frequently asked questions" and you can find them at
http://letterboxing.org/ just put your mouse over the faq and click.

hope this helps you out...... and do stick around!

Welcome aboard always nice to have newbies. Don't let the little
misunderstandings steer you away; this is a geart hobby if you like
the outdoors, solving clues, and hunting for treasures. The only
rule is there are none (but this one Do not hide boxes in National
parks or State parks{big problem search the archives}). When
there's nothing on the list worth reading check out the Files,
Photos, Links, and Database pages found on the left side of this
page. Also check and see if there are any talk groups for you area
that way you can read about things in your area and not in ten buck
two. The main thing is to have fun.

I don't believe hiding boxes in State parks is a no no.. National parks yes,
at least here in Oregon, we hide boxes in state parks with no problem, with
a very few minor exceptions.

I must agree with uneksia, I usually just sit back and read. I learn more that way. I ask questions when I have one and it hasn't been asked by others recently. I find this a lively group and am very happy that I joined this informative and helpful group of people.

It seems strange that people associate letterboxing and this group so
close together that you can not do one with out the other. I did not
even bother with this group for the first year that I did
letterboxing. When I joined the group there was a flame war going on
about something ridiculous. It makes me wonder why people get so
upset about something that is supposed to be fun.

Anyway, don't let a couple of people who get offended at the the tip
of a letterbox keep anyone from enjoying a great hobby. Anyone can
enjoy letterboxing without being a part of this group. It is
possible. And less stressful for some people.

Bob2

PS Although I am a part of this group, I do not get new posts sent to
my e-mail. When I am online, I check to see if there is anything of
interest and avoid the messages that seem unboxish, (most of the
time).

I hope you don't think that this group is really hostile towards each other. Because most of the time these letterboxers are just playing around with one another. Alot of them know each other and have for years, and there really is no ill will between anyone for the most part. There are a lot of good people in this group, and please don't give up a great hobby because of a few messages that were misinterpreted. Thanks and let us know about any questions you do have. -Kellie
