Newbie!

From: isis_worship (dolphingod@gmail.com) | Date: 2004-07-03 00:19:55 UTC
Hi everyone! I'm new to the fun (and yes, I was wise enough to read
the FAQ before posting here) and found my first letter box today -
Virginia Manatee Mystery Box.

I do have a question/comment on the clues that are on the database.
I have noticed that very few of the clues mention whether or not the
placed box (whereever it may be) is acceptable for dogs to
accompany. As I am alone on my pursuit of boxes for the time being
(hubby out to sea), I wanted to be able to bring our dog for company
and exercise for her. But I also don't want to drive to a park or
wherever and find out that I have to go right back home again
because they don't allow dogs.

I know you can look up parks on the internet, but not all of them
mention the acceptability of dogs. I think it would be nice if
those putting up the clues would list if it is dog-friendly or not.

Just a thought,
jenn

Off the cuff, you can get a solution - albeit one that takes more time - by 'Contact the Placer'. I'm always happy to throw in whatever answers anybody should ask of me about our boxes. Some folks live in different sorts of areas, but under The von der Insels, all our boxes are any sort of animal friendly except, of course, dead lemurs.

That is a very good suggestion! I rarely go anywhere without my best friend, Dude the Wonder Dog, and with rare exception will only hunt/plant in parks that are dog friendly because he is my trail buddy too. But I have never put it in my clues. Good idea, thanks!

Don't forget, though, that what would be just a nice tip in an
ordinary clue could be a spoiler in a mystery box. So the info may
be left out on purpose.
We faced the No Dogs Allowed signs at not one, not two, but three
parks in a row on one l'boxing venture. Finally got the hound in for
the fourth try and were rewarded with an awesome sunset in addition
to the box, it had gotten so late. But,whenever we find ourselve
somewhere lacking info that a little more research would have
uncovered, hubby and I just look at each other and sing, "Call
ahead, Ohio.... Call ahead." Which seems so odd to the kids, since
we live in NJ. Does anyone else remember that jingle from Ohio Bell
about 25 years ago?

Wow! And I thought I was the oldest person on the list! LOL!

So does that mean live ones are friendly?
Having just returned from Cincy. Their Zoo hosts 3 different
varieties and all were very much alive. Now I know what to look for
with regards to dead ones.
Since L stands for my reptile count, I have a problem for my lemur
count. I could switch R for reptile and make L for Lemur........ Oh
forget it. Ya'll think I'm nuts anyway.

Thank you for the suggestion! That is one solution that I didn't
think of and would probably save me a little time.

I wonder how it would be a spoiler other than it limits the places
that the mystery box could be? I hadn't thought of that, but I
suppose you are right.

I don't recognize the jingle - I have never even heard of Ohio Bell,
but then again, I spent the majority of my early life in MA with Ma
Bell. :)

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll be doing just that this weekend!

Good question!

I am grateful for the question and I think bringing your dog is a wonderful
safety tip as well!
